The timber in Merisier-Hamilton windows
Our windows are made from the heartwood of high-quality Scandinavian pine. The only trees used are from managed forests where the rate of replanting is greater than the rate of felling.
Great care is taken when selecting the timber, with 10 moisture measurements made per centimetre. This ensures the quality.
Top-grade timber with no vacuum treatment
Only a certain part of the tree is used for our windows: wood from the bottom of the tree up to where the diameter of the stem is 300 mm and, from there, only the heart of the wood. This is the best preserved part of the tree, and unlike the wood used in other window frames, it does not need vacuum treating.
Comb joints for strength, stability and beauty
The selected wood is planed, then scanned and filmed so that any knots, cracks, pockets of resin and other defects are revealed. After scanning, the wood is cut, and defects are removed. The pure wood is then press-bonded together into 6-metre lengths called ‘comb joints’, which form the building blocks of our windows.
Comb joints have several technical and aesthetic advantages. They are strong and stable, with a uniform surface, only a few small knots showing, and a very minimal risk of resin content.
Environmentally-friendly treatment
The wood used in Merisier-Hamilton windows is never treated with conventional VAC/VAC processes - only with an environmentally-friendly water-based impregnation system.
